Greenhough Estate – Organic Wines from Nelson, New Zealand

Nelson has been described as Marlborough’s ‘shy neighbour’. Sitting similarly at the north end of South Island, it remains relatively unknown, yet producers here craft wines that are full of character and have a sense of place that is often missing from its more illustrious neighbour. Foremost amongst these is Greenhough Estate, an owner-run boutique producer and long-term proponent of organic viticulture.

Established by pioneer winemaker Andrew “Drew” Greenhough and his wife Jenny Wheeler in the 1970s, they have gradually expanded the Greenhough Estate to 13 hectares of mainly Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Drew’s respect for terroir and the purity and balance of his wines have led to many awards and a loyal following. Greenhough Estate has only recently become available in this country and we are keen to introduce them to a wider audience, so we encourage you to take advantage of our introductory prices which are available until December 1st!

Greenhough Estate ‘River Garden’ Sauvignon Blanc, 2022

This has a classic Marlborough style with passion fruit, melon and citrus flavours but with additional notes of freshly cut grass and aromatic herbs from the Nelson terroir. Tasted blind we found that this Sauvignon sits happily alongside the very best that New Zealand has to offer.

Greenhough Estate ‘Road Block’ Chardonnay, 2019

The old Chardonnay vines on the lower slopes give a wine that is full of rich, ripe fruit flavours whilst retaining a tangy citrus freshness. With 10 months in French oak barrels and a few years in bottle, this wine has a wonderful creamy richness supporting pear and ripe apple flavours. This is all balanced by a pure, delicate minerality that makes this a most attractive and generous wine.

Greenhough Estate ‘Stone’s Throw’ Pinot Noir, 2019

This has ripeness without too much alcohol, and measured use of oak barrels to allow the pure fruit to shine through. This has an elegance and depth reminiscent of red Burgundy and a lovely, perfumed complexity that belies its price. Lively aromas of ripe cherry and raspberry fruit. Good intensity on the palate with silky tannins, red berry fruits and a gentle spiciness that lingers nicely.
